How to Set BIOS or UEFI Password on Windows 10
BIOS stands for Basic Input Output
System and on the other hand UEFI stands for Unified Extensible Firmware
Interface. Both are loaded onto your Motherboard’s ROM and they manage every hardware at the core level.
Both BIOS as well as UEFI, are systems that are made to be an interface between the operating system on the computer hardware at large. The BIOS and UEFI provide some critical setting that can be changed to make changes on a computer which might be harmful. Therefore, it is a good idea to set a password for BIOS or UEFI to keep your system safe.
Now, BIOS is an older system while UEFI is relatively new and both have different ways of setting a password. We will see both the method that will allow you to set BIOS or UEFI Password on Windows 10.
Set BIOS Password on Windows 10
To set your BIOS password, you need to follow the steps listed below.
While turning on your PC, press the key to boot into BIOS mode.
These keys can be DEL, ESC, F10, F12 etc. depending on the motherboard or system you have.
You can read the key on your screen while booting.
After entering the BIOS mode, just head over to System and look for
Security.
Your settings might be different but look for the Security options.
Inside security options, you will find the section where you can set the password for your BIOS.
You can setup User Password and Supervisor Password.
The User Password needs to be entered while booting up the PC and the Supervisor password is required while making changes in the BIOS.
You can set both or either one of them depending on your preferences. After setting the passwords, you can just go ahead and then save the changes. If you set a supervisor password, it will be asked every time you try to change setting in BIOS.
Set UEFI Password on Windows 10
I have a PC that has a UEFI BIOS which means I can use my mouse and keyboard to change setting. The setting changes on these are quite easy. All you need to do is enter the UEFI BIOS mode by pressing the correct key at boot.
At the time of boot, press the button that will get you into UEFI BIOS mode.
For my system its DEL but for others, it can be ESC, F12 etc. Just read the screen on boot and you will know which button to press.
After you have entered the UEFI mode, you need to look for Advanced Settings.
Enter Advanced Settings and then move on to change the password in the Security section.
In the Security section of UEFI BIOS, you will find two options:
Administrator Password
User Password
The Administrator Password is used to restrict someone to access the UEFI BIOS settings and the User Password is used to allow or restrict people to boot up.
Set the password you want to set, it is very simple.
After you have set the password, just choose the Save changes & Exit while exiting the UEFI BIOS mode and all the settings you have changed will be saved.
