Microsoft reports new VR headsets for Windows 10, beginning at $299

Image
Microsoft’s partners will ship a new line of virtual reality headsets to take advantage of Windows 10’s VR and holographic capabilities. At today’s event, Microsoft said that the headsets will start at $299 and will include inside-out tracking sensors, obviating the need for external cameras or laser systems like those on the current Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer are all listed as partners. While relatively little is known about the headsets, the six-degree-of-freedom tracking system sounds similar to Oculus’ Santa Cruz prototype , which also includes inside-out tracking. They are distinct from Microsoft HoloLens, an augmented or “mixed” reality headset that projects virtual objects into the real world. While the headsets don’t need external trackers, the one we saw on stage today still looks to be wired, not totally self-contained like Santa Cruz. Microsoft’s liste

Samsung's new four-in-one washer/dryer takes clothing to the outrageous

Image
I hate doing laundry more than any other chore in my life. Between dragging a laundry bag around the corner to the laundromat, lugging detergent, counting out the right amount of quarters, and waiting for loads to finish, every load represents tons of my life wasted. Suffice to say, I'm extremely interested in Samsung's absolutely crazy four-in-one FlexWash + FlexDry laundry system , which promises to be "the most advanced, flexible laundry solution" in the world. First up is the FlexWash washing machine, which starts things off with five cubic feet of laundry capacity (Samsung says this is the most for machines in its class). But the magic comes in a second one-cubic foot washer on top, allowing you to do two loads at once, finally providing a way for me to wash the single red shirt I own without having to run a second useless load.

Live coverage from the year's biggest technology conference, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The year in tech starts here. Every company tries to be the first with the biggest CES announcement, but Asus has been preempted today by hardware partner Qualcomm, which has revealed the upcoming ZenFone AR smartphone with Google Tango support. At the same, prolific leaker @evleaks has provided an image of both the front and back of the new phone. Spotted by GSM Arena and others, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Blog today disclosed the news about the Asus ZenFone AR, which will follow in the footsteps of the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro , the first phone with Google Tango. Tango is a souped-up version of augmented reality from Google that holds a lot of promise, but still needs work. The ZenFone AR will be powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor, same class of chip as in the Google Pixel and OnePlus 3T. It will also be

Malware found on vitality organization portable PC may not be aftereffect of Russian hack

Suspicious activity detected on a Vermont-based utilities company laptop last week may not have been linked to Russian hackers, the Washington Post says today . That's a reversal on a report published by the Post last week , in which it said that US officials had found evidence of Russian malware on a computer at the Burlington Electric Department, code linked to a hacking operation codenamed " Grizzly Steppe " by US intelligence officers. The Post originally said hackers had breached the US electrical grid The alert was reportedly triggered when a Burlington Electric Department employee noticed his computer had connected to a suspicious IP address while checking his Yahoo email inbox. The IP address in question had previously been associated with Grizzly Steppe — the operation connected to the DNC email hack last year — but experts and officials close to the investigation now say that the traffic may have been benign. Lenovo has made an Amazon Reverberate carbon copy, however with better speakers

Image
Lenovo, the world’s largest PC maker, is getting into "smart" speakers. The company just unveiled the Lenovo Smart Assistant, a tall, tubular speaker that has Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa built in. Lenovo says it worked directly with Amazon to integrate Amazon’s Alexa Voice Services, which are expected to show up in a wide variety of products at this year’s CES. At first glance the Lenovo Smart Assistant looks, well, like Amazon’s own Echo speaker (unlike the Google Home, for example, which looks more like an air freshener). And the Smart Assistant will work pretty much the same way as the Echo: you’ll be able to use your voice to ask Alexa for the news, play music, set timers, and so on. But there are a few notable differences between Amazon’s own speaker and Lenovo’s variant. For one, the color schemes are different, with Lenovo offering the Smart Assistant in light green, gray, or orange fabric. The micropho

Lenovo's lead ThinkPad X1 Carbon gets a littler form and longer-enduring battery life

Image
Last week Lenovo said that it was modernizing its heavy-duty ThinkPad laptops in a variety of ways. Turns out some of those improvements are coming to its ThinkPad X1 Carbon, X1 Yoga, and X1 Tablet computers as well, which fall into Lenovo’s "ultraportable" business line. The new, fifth-generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop looks a lot like the previous model but is actually smaller, weighing less than 2.5 pounds (compared with the earlier 2.7-pound model) and cramming a full HD, 14-inch diagonal display into a 13-inch carbon fiber body. It runs on a new Kaby Lake processor and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE modem. Vlad Savov The new ThinkPad X1 Carbon also boasts a whopping 15.5 hours of battery life; reviews of the previous model had it maxed out at around 10 hours. And it supports Microsoft’s Precision Trackpad, which the other newer ThinkPad

Youthful mother kicks the bucket on Facebook live and no one does anything to help her instantly

26-year-old Keiana Herndon's family says she loved sharing her life with others through Facebook live videos. On December 28th Herndon went live on Facebook with her 1-year-old son. In the video, which has since been deleted from Facebook, Herndon started talking about her plans to go back to school, and showing off her one-year-old son Rylee. Then she started singing, but shortly after the video started, Herndon's demeanor changed. Her aunt, Barbara Johnson who saw her on Facebook Live said: “She go to whipping her face and shaking her head, and I was thinking, what’s wrong with Kei? We call her Kei. She then, she fell back and then Riley picked the phone up and started talking and playing and then I hear (gasping) then I heard one more … I didn’t hear nothing else.” Herndon's father, Richard, said that after she collapsed, the number of viewers kept growing but nobody was alarmed enough to call the Police or call her to check on her to see if she
